Grandparent’s Prayer: How to Pray for Your Grandchildren’s Future with Faith and Hope
My great-aunt Marye lived to be 108 years old. She was born in 1913, when people traveled by horse and buggy. Fifty years later, she watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.
She was 7 years old when women gained the right to vote, and a teenager during the Great Depression. As an adult, she embraced brand new things like TVs and commercial airlines that she used to jet off to Europe. Who would have imagined all this for a baby born in the rural Midwest?
It makes you wonder what changes our grandkids will experience.
Does a grandparent’s prayer today make a difference in the course of history? Absolutely!
Aunt Marye’s father was a Methodist minister, and I have no doubt he and his wife (my great-grandmother) prayed for their children. While we’ve had our share of life’s tribulations, there has always been a wide river of faith running through our family. Faith made possible by the example of Christian living and reliance on God that the older generation modeled for us. Our grandparents’ prayers are still protecting us today.
We can do the same thing for our children and grandchildren! As we pray today, we can bless and protect our grandkids and great-great-grandkids for generations to come.
Here are 7 steps you can start on today that will have far-reaching effects.
1. Start with Trust: God Has a Good Plan
I admit, I do worry about my grandkids sometimes. They are young and defenseless, and there are so many terrible things that can happen. That feeling of fear serves to remind me that I need to release my cares to God. All of my cares. A grandparent’s prayer should be confident and full of faith. Not mixed with concern and a heart full of what ifs.
God is bigger than any problem here on Earth. The Bible shows us God’s power and love again and again. He knows what the future holds.
Bible Verse:
Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Grandparent’s Prayer Focus:
Ask God to fulfill His purpose in your grandchildren’s lives. Invite Him to arrange their future. Ask Him to prepare your grandchildren for the challenges they will face. Pray that they will turn to God for guidance.
Prayer Prompt:
Lord, help me trust that You are writing a good story for each of my grandchildren. I pray you will show them their calling early in life. Let their parents work with you to develop their children’s talents. Let them be strong leaders in your church and community. Thank You for your love and care for my family now and into the future. Amen.

2. Pray for your Grandchildren’s Salvation and Spiritual Growth
For our grandchildren to build lives with lasting, eternal value, their foundation must begin with Jesus. We can pray that they will come to know Him personally, grow in faith, and develop a love for God’s Word. As they walk with Him, we can ask that their hearts and choices reflect His character and that they become more like Jesus every day.
Bible Verse:
John 17:3 ESV
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent
Grandparent’s Prayer Focus:
Pray that each grandchild will come to know the Lord personally and choose to serve Him. Pray that God fills them with His Spirit. Ask God to help them grow in faith and character. Pray that they love God’s word and read their Bibles with an open heart.
Prayer Prompt:
Lord, draw my grandchildren close to You today. Let them experience Your love and presence for themselves. Please, Lord, let them know and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior so they may receive forgiveness of their sins and be able to spend eternity in Heaven with You. In fact, let all of the future generations in my family do the same. Let each person grow strong in faith and act in ways that please You. Amen.

3. Pray for Their Character and Choices
Modeling our lives after Jesus can be counter-cultural. When it comes to our grandchildren’s character and choices, this will set them apart. For example, 1 Corinthians 13:13 says, “And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love”. Colossians 3 advises us to “clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience”.
How will a child like this survive in the world?
The secret is that these qualities align them with God, and God will be their power and protector. As we pray for our grandchildren to develop integrity, wisdom, and courage, we are also bringing God’s touch to their lives, which will only result in good things. “Fear not, only believe” Mark 5:36
Bible Verse:
Colossians 3:8-10 NLT
But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
Grandparent’s Prayer Focus:
Pray that your grandchildren will read their Bibles and apply its lessons to themselves. Pray that you and the other adults in your family will model Godly character. Pray for specific character traits to grow or be removed, as necessary. Ask God to help them make wise decisions in school, friendships, and future work.
Prayer Prompts:
Father, I pray that my grandchildren will always choose what honors You. I pray they will value the character traits that You do. Let them hear Your voice above those of the world. Lord help them to grow into young men and women who are shining lights in our world. Let them lead others to You by their words and actions. Amen.

4. Grandparent’s Prayer for Their Relationships
When I’m praying about my grandchildren’s friends and family, I’m also praying about the influence these relationships have. I pray for healthy friendships, godly mentors, and—if it’s God’s plan—the right future spouse. I want my grandchildren to be kind and helpful to all people, but I want their close friends to be Christians, so they have that strand of three that the Bible talks about.
Bible Verse:
Ecclesiastes 4:12 NKJV
Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
1 Corinthians 15:33 ESV
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals”.
Grandparent’s Prayer Focus:
Ask God to surround your grandkids with people who encourage them in faith. Ask for kind, loyal friends who have good character and integrity, and that your grandchildren will be the same kind of good friend. Pray that their teachers and coaches will be good, moral people.
Prayer Prompts:
Lord, I pray that my grandchildren will have an easy time making friends and being accepted into their peer groups. Help my grandchild have good, loyal Christian friends. Let them find favor with their teachers and others in authority over them. Lord, place the right people in my grandchildren’s lives—those who will make a difference for their future. Amen.

5. Pray for Their Calling and Purpose
I truly hope that my grandkids will discover their calling early in their life and have the courage and opportunity to pursue whatever it is. How I admire those people who can say, “I knew I wanted to be a nurse or a pilot or fill in the blank ever since I was little”. I was not one of those people and spent a lot of time wandering. Let’s save our grandchildren time and frustration by praying that they know and accept their purpose.
Bible Verse:
Ephesians 2:10 NLT
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Grandparent’s Prayer Focus:
Pray that your grandkids will discover how God uniquely designed them to serve Him. Ask that they have opportunities to develop their gifts. Pray that they use their gifts with confidence and compassion.
Prayer Prompts:
Lord, please show my grandchildren the purpose You have for them and help them walk boldly in it. I pray that they will find joy in the calling You have placed on them. Please provide the education, opportunities, and mentors they need to grow up and use their skills for Your purposes. Lord, we know all Your thoughts towards us are good. Thank You for what You are doing in my grandchildren’s lives. Amen.

6. Pray for Your Grandchildren’s Protection
As grandparents, we find ourselves praying for our grandchildren’s protection almost every day. It might be a quiet thought—“Please, God, keep them safe”—when we hear about their plans, or a tender “Take care, now” as we end a phone call. Beneath those words is a deep desire that they’ll be shielded from harm and spared from anything that could cause lasting hurt.
Because our grandchildren’s safety is such a concern, I have another post on praying for our grandchildren’s protection. It starts with the child, individually, and moves outward to their family, their neighborhood, school, and city.
If you have older grandchildren, you may find this post on praying for online safety helpful.
Bible Verse:
2 Thessalonians 3:3 ESV
But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one
Grandparent’s Prayer Focus:
Ask God to guard your grandchild’s physical safety. Ask the Lord to protect their mind and spirit from temptation and lies from the enemy.
Prayer Prompts:
Heavenly Father, guard my grandchildren in every season of life—keep them safe in body, mind, and spirit. Please give them discernment to avoid people and activities that will cause them harm. I pray my grandchildren will stay closely connected to You and that You will be their shield and protector. Amen.

7. Pray for Your Own Role in Their Future
I’m sure every grandparent’s prayer is to be involved in their grandchildren’s lives. Let’s ask God to make us steady spiritual influences and sources of encouragement. Let’s also keep praying that every member of our family, now and into the far-distant future, will embrace their Christian heritage. You have the ability right now to fill their lives with prayer no matter what the future looks like.
Bible Verse:
Psalm 102-18 ESV
Let this be recorded for a generation to come,
so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD
Ephesians 5:15-16 NIV
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
Grandparent’s Prayer Focus:
Let me be faithful in prayer. Ask God to clean up your life so that you can be a shining example to your grandchildren now. Ask God to give you opportunities to share your faith with your grandkids. Pray that you have good relationships with your own children and their husbands/wives.
Prayer Prompts:
Lord, help me live in a way that’s pleasing to You, so my grandchildren see You through me. Let me be a safe, welcoming person in their lives. Let them learn about Your love and Your power as we walk through the day-to-day together. Amen.
This is a very good post about generational prayer. The author, Rick Whitter is an administrative Bishop with the Church of God, and a former pastor.
Conclusion
As grandparents, we can’t predict what changes are coming in the future. Fortunately, God never changes. God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and eternal. He loves our grandchildren, and we can trust Him to care of them.
When we pray for our grandchildren’s future, we’re not just asking God to bless their days ahead; we’re inviting Him to shape their hearts, guide their paths, and draw them close to Himself. Our prayers become part of their story—a quiet legacy of faith and trust that will outlast us.
Every prayer we whisper, every verse we claim, every hope we lift to heaven is an act of love that reaches far beyond what we can see.
So keep praying, even when you can’t see the answers yet. God is faithful. And in His perfect time, He will bring to pass all He has planned for your grandchildren, for their good and His glory.
