How to Pray for Your Grandchildren on the National Day of Prayer
Coming up on May 7, 2026, the National Day of Prayer (United States) centers on a theme close to a grandmother’s heart: “Glorify God Among the Nations—Seeking Him in All Generations.”
As you know, here at PrayerRaising, we’re all about grandparents praying for the generation growing up right now. It’s the older generation covering the younger one in prayer. And when we pray for our grandchildren, we’re actually shaping the spiritual future of our nation in ways we may not even realize.
That’s why it matters to pray not just for them, but for the world they’re growing up in—the culture, the communities, and the influences that will shape their lives.
What Are We Supposed To Do on the National Day of Prayer?
It’s a day for us to turn to God in prayer for our country and its leaders. It’s a day to reflect on where we are as a country right now and where God would like us to be. We use this time to repent and then ask for God’s guidance and blessing going forward.
Many churches and communities hold public gatherings, or you can pray privately, if you wish.
Biblical Basis for a National Day of Prayer.
1 Timothy 2:1-3 CSB
First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, 2 for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3 This is good, and it pleases God our Savior,
President Truman signed the National Day of Prayer into law in 1952. In 1988, President Reagan designated the first Thursday of May as the permanent date. But when we look in the Bible, we often find leaders calling for national prayer.
In Nehemiah 1, Nehemiah prays for the city of Jerusalem and the people of Israel. He starts by confessing the people’s sins and asking for God’s forgiveness and mercy.
In Esther 4, before Esther goes to ask the king for mercy on the Jewish people, she asks the community to pray and fast for 3 days.
In Judges 3, the people of Israel asked God for a judge to lead them. God raised up Othniel the son of Kenaz who delivered them from captivity. Verse 11 tells us they had rest for 40 years.
And finally, in Acts 12:5, we see the early church gathered together, earnestly praying for Peter while he was in prison—and God moved in a powerful way.
Moments like these remind us just how meaningful it is when God’s people come together in prayer. But it’s also helpful to pause for a moment and remember a few limits on this day.
What the National Day of Prayer is Not.
It’s not for praying for personal needs like health or finances. It’s not about praying for individual people’s salvation. The focus should be on your community, state, and the country.
That said, praying for our country involves praying for our leaders and the people in their communities. A nation is not just policies or headlines—it’s people, their families, and their hearts toward God.

Seven Ways to Pray for Your Grandchildren That Will Impact the Nation.
1. Pray for Their Faith – A Nation of Believers
2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV
if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
It’s easy to fall into fear when we think about the huge problems facing our country. Ten minutes of reading any kind of news used to lead me to despair. I wonder what hope any child has growing up whole amid the violence and ever-changing morals we see now.
But God has given us the way out in 2 Chronicles, with a promise to heal our land if we will turn to Him in prayer. Let’s pray this verse will become a foundation for our grandchildren’s lives. Let their hearts be transformed so they grow up to shape their generation’s culture.
Dear God, I pray that Your Holy Spirit will call each of my grandchildren to a saving knowledge of Jesus. May they develop deep roots in Christ and never waver in their faith. Please protect them, guide them, and teach them Your truth. Thank You, Lord. Amen.
2. Pray for Their Character – A Nation of Integrity
Wouldn’t it be great if our grandkids learned to take their direction from God’s Word instead of whatever voice happens to be the loudest around them? It’s easy to see how many different influences are competing for their attention. That’s why we can pray that their hearts would be anchored in truth—that they would grow into people marked by integrity, compassion, and the courage to stand for what’s right.
Because one day, they will step into roles of influence in their own communities. They may be business owners, teachers, first responders, or even pastors. And who they become will impact the people around them. So, let’s be faithful to pray for their character on this national day of prayer, trusting that God is shaping them into the kind of men and women our world truly needs.
Lord Jesus, I pray today that my grandchildren will grow up to be people with Your character – having Your love for people and Your obedience to God. I pray for the children across our nation: that they will learn virtues like honesty, hard work, responsibility, and a life of service. May they be like King David, about whom you said, “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will”. Acts 13:22. Lord, pour out Your Spirit on our boys and girls that they lead our country and make it what You would have it be. Amen.
3. Pray for Their Homes – Their First Influence
Lord God, please bless the children of this nation with safe, stable homes. I pray that each child will feel valued and loved within their family. Most of all, let each family nurture the faith of their children and teach them the lessons of unity, peace, respect, and forgiveness that are necessary parts of family life. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.

4. Pray For Their Communities – Nurturing All Children.
When we think about the people who care for our grandchildren, we usually picture the obvious ones—friends, teachers, maybe a coach or two. But honestly, it goes even bigger than that. The whole community they’re growing up in plays a part.
That’s why we need to pray for the communities around them on the National Day of Prayer. We can pray for city leaders to care about children, for schools to be safe and encouraging places, and for foster care systems to truly protect and nurture the kids who need it most. Because when those things are strong, it blesses every child—including the ones we love most.
Lord, I pray for the cities and towns of the United States. I pray that there will be strong systems in place so that all the kids in our nation will be safe, fed, and educated.
Lord, fill our local leaders with your spirit so they make decisions that will benefit our children.
Let school districts hire good, moral people and expose anyone who has bad intentions toward a child.
Please, Lord, let our foster care system work for kids. Please equip those parents you have called with money and respite care, and fill their hearts with love for their foster children.
Lord, let our churches do more than entertain children on Sunday, let them teach the truth about Jesus and our need for Him. Let there be revival in our churches that draws in families and changes lives.
Father, we know each child is precious to You. Let them be precious to us. Amen.
5. Pray for Their Influences – A Nation Formed by Truth
Lord, let my family and I be truth-seekers. Protect our eyes, our ears, and our hearts from lies that seem to come from every direction. Let us not be deceived by media, entertainment, or advertising. Protect the children in our country from harmful cultural messages about the way they look and their value based on performance.
As they get older, pray that our grandchildren become wise in sorting through the noise. That’s a life skill they are going to need! Please, Lord, bless them with the gift of discernment.
I pray You, Lord, will raise up news agencies we can rely on. Continue to inspire clean movies and TV shows. That You will raise up Christian voices across all media platforms. And that soon, the children of the United States will be those voices for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
6. Pray for Their Future Roles – A Nation Guided by Godly Leaders
Father God, thank you for the joy in watching my grandchildren grow up. They are young now, but they are the parents, teachers, voters, and leaders of tomorrow.
Please prepare them now for the roles they will have as adults. Lord, I know some of these lessons may come through hardship, so I pray they will see Your goodness even when You say no.
Lord, I know You have a purpose for each child in our country, and I pray they will have the resources and encouragement to run towards their assignment. I pray they will know your voice and be loyal workers for your kingdom. Amen.

7. Pray for Their Witness – A Nation Reached Through Everyday Faith
I believe God has special plans for this generation coming up. He can make them shine in a special way. Whatever the plans are that He has, we know they are plans for good, to benefit and prosper them.
Lord, I pray that the children in our nation follow You with their whole hearts. Let them be people who reach out to those who don’t know Jesus and bring these people into the Kingdom. Let their witnessing be strong – full of truth and compassion. Lord, let them bring in a harvest so great it has never been seen before. I pray that they are and always will be shining lights in Your kingdom. Amen.
A Grandparent’s Unique Calling on the National Day of Prayer
As grandparents, our retirement days may soon be arriving, if they aren’t here already. We may not set company policy anymore or even hold the influence in our churches like we once did, but we still have work to do. We have been reassigned to the US Prayer Force!
Quiet, faithful prayer is not small; it is strategic. Our job now is to influence people as we pray for our leaders now, and our grandkids as they become those leaders in the future. We are building a spiritual foundation for our families and our nation.
Closing Prayer.
Dear Lord, thank You for the many, many blessings You have given the United States. Freedom, wealth, and beautiful land. Lord, I confess that as a nation we have not lived in gratitude and humility towards You the way we should. So many of us have turned away from You, to live by self-will, deceived into thinking that is freedom. Please forgive us, Lord. Pour out Your Spirit across this country and call the lost back to You.
Lord, allow us to live again in a right relationship with You. I pray that each family, city, and state would welcome Your presence; seek Your direction and follow You.
Please call the leaders of our nation to build a society that will be good for our grandchildren to live in. Let them tear down institutions built on lies and remove evil from the way we operate. Give them new and better ways to govern our country.
Lord, I pray that you will be done for this generation being raised now. That they will grow up with old-fashioned virtue and live with fresh, innovative solutions to the problems of our country. Please bless them as they follow You. And let them hear, well done, good and faithful servants. Amen.
Hope for the future.
As a praying grandma, I am invested in praying for the generation of children being raised right now. And as we pray for them, we’re also placing a quiet, steady hope into the future of our country.
The 2026 theme is a good reminder that all generations need to seek God and pray together for the spiritual foundation of our country.
God hears every prayer, even the ones whispered over little lives, and He is more than able to use them in ways we may never fully see. So, let’s keep praying—faithfully, expectantly—trusting that He is at work in both our families and our nation.
