Get started praying Psalm 91 for those grandkids you love.

Don’t you just love Psalm 91? It’s got to be one of my favorites when it comes to Psalms. Saving us from the deadly pestilence and covering us with his feathers. The images are striking! And praying Psalm 91 is a wonderful way to look after our loved ones. As faithful and devoted grandparents let’s combine this favorite Psalm with praying for our favorite people: our grandkids. How can we go wrong?

Praying Psalm 91: Verses 1-2

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”

Dear Lord,
Thank you for the promises we have of your love and protection. I pray that my grandchildren get to know You and want to follow You for themselves. Let them be attracted to Your light and be repelled by the darkness in life without you. I pray they will stay close to You always, not just run to you when they have trouble. Let me be a good example of how to “live in Your shadow”.

Jesus, let them know you are a safe place to turn to when they have problems. You are a safe haven when small problems come along. You are a strong fortress when the battle is fierce. Lord, please safeguard my grandkids so that any trouble they have is for their growth and wisdom. Thank you for providing a safe place for us here in this world. Amen.

Praying Psalm 91: verse 3

Surely, He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler
And from the perilous pestilence.

Jesus, my grandchildren, like all kids, are pretty innocent of the ways of the world. There are so many snares they can get caught up in! Lord, please warn them about activities, ideas, even friends who may lead them into trouble. Deliver them from evil. Let no plans of the enemy prosper against them. Keep them from snares like insecurity, rebellion, and unbelief.

Lord, teach them to be wise about the world and its temptations and show them how to stay spiritually pure and connected to you. I know they will learn about evil things eventually but let it be from behind a screen of your truth. Let them quickly reject life apart from You and the consequences it carries.

Thank you, Jesus, that you are able and willing to protect my grandkids and I pray that you will be a safeguard around them. Amen.

Note: You can pause on praying Psalm 91 for a minute because this is a good place to pray for deliverance of anything a grandchild might be going through right now (rebellion, anxiety, even too much screen time).

Verse 4

He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

A picture of an elementary school age boy holding a buckler. He has an orange shirt on but is partially hidden by the buckler. It is made of wood with 2 iron pieces added to the front. This is to illustrate the post Praying Psalm 91 in verse 4 that mentions a buckler.
This boy is holding a buckler.

A picture of a knight in armor holding a shiled. The shield is blue with a unicorn in the middle of it and has gold around the edges. This is used to illustrate the post Praying Psalm 91, verse 4 which talks about a shield.
This knight has a shield in front of him.

God is faithful to protect those who come to him for comfort and help. God wants a relationship with our grandkids so that they feel they can go to him with little cares as well as big, life-changing problems. That way He can show them His heart for them.

How can I model this kind of relationship with God?

Saying grace over meals is a way to show that God cares about the common daily things in our lives. Praying before a major decision is a way you can model trusting God in the big things.

Praying Psalm 91 verses 5-8

You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.

Lord God, it is a comfort to know that You can see my grandchildren at all times. Lord, it’s crazy down here in the world and we need Your help! Thank you for the times You have kept my grandchildren from accidents and dangers when we didn’t even know it.

Lord I pray that (grandchildren’s names) will not be fearful. Bedtime, in particular, can be scary because it’s dark and they are alone in their beds. Surround them with your protection, Lord, and comfort them with your Prescence. Calm their racing minds and relax their tired bodies. Remind them that You can see in the dark and that our reward for staying close to You is the assurance that You are watching out for us.

You are faithful, day and night. Let them trust in You.  Amen.

Verses 9-10

Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;

Trouble vs evil.

I read this Bible commentary on Psalm 91 that talked about trouble vs. evil. We know that here on earth we are going to have trouble. Sometimes God allows difficulties to build our character.  (If you’ve ever prayed for patience, you know then you’ll get lots of things to be patient about.) This commentary pointed out that trouble is one thing but trouble with evil in it is something worse. For example, seeing a suggestive picture is one thing unless it leads to porn addiction, which is quite another. In praying Psalm 91 over our grandchildren, we can access God’s goodness – even in trouble.

Lord, you know all the ways the devil tries to get a foothold in people’s lives. Please don’t let any of these plans succeed when it comes to my grandkids. I know they are going to make mistakes but please keep them small and let them learn quickly how to do better. Let them see and be appalled by the consequences. I pray they will want to do better because they are Your children and have Your nature. Let their identity be Children of God. And let them live near to you through prayer and reading your word each day. Amen.

Praying Psalm 91 Verses 11-13

For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

Lord, I trust in your protection for my grandchildren. I don’t know what danger they’re in at any given time, but You do, and unlike me, You can dispatch angels to help them. Thank you for caring about these kids who are so important to me. You work in mysterious ways Lord. Whether it’s angels intervening, or a person in the right place at the right time, I ask you to walk them through their day. Lord let my grandchildren stay close to you in spirit today as we trust in your care. Your word tells us that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). I pray my grandkids will believe Your word and know that, with Your help, they can do the things they need to do, even when they’re hard. Even better, I pray that they will grow up to do great things in Your Kingdom. Amen.

Verses 14-16

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”

These are some great promises! God knows who contains His Spirit – who loves Him with their heart, mind, and soul. And He stands ready to answer the prayers of the faithful and show us His salvation.

As grandparents, we have the privilege of covering our grandchildren in prayer, entrusting them to God’s loving care. Praying Psalm 91 ensures that no matter what challenges they face, they are never beyond the reach of God’s protection. May you witness the faithfulness of God in the lives of your precious grandchildren.

Here is another cool way to apply Psalm 91. These are affirmations based on the Pslam. I didn’t write them, but I wish I had. Ha Ha.
