Lifted in Love: Boldly Praying for My Grandson

King David, who is described as a man after God’s own heart, had a very impressive great-grandma. I’m talking about Naomi from the book of Ruth. She was Ruth’s mother-in-law. Later in the story, Ruth had a son named Obed, Obed became the father of Jesse and Jesse the father of David. I am sure that when Naomi was asked about her priorities, she had “praying for my grandson” near the top of the list.
And her grandson became a great man.
How can we do any less for our grandsons?
Lord thank you so much for my grandson!
I love his energy, and he always makes me smile. When I look into his eyes I see goodness, enthusiasm, and a spirit of adventure. I know he trusts me, and I pray, with Your help, that I will live up to his high opinion of me now. Thank You Lord for putting this child in our family; at this time, in this place for the work You have picked out for him to do. Work through our family to provide him with a solid start in life. Let him be sure of our love for him and open his eyes to Your love that is all around him. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

I’m praying for my grandson to come to know Jesus at an early age.
Let (grandson’s name) find his purpose in You. Please let him respect Your Word – the Bible – and believe the truth we find there. Give him many, many chances to hear about Jesus and the reconciliation He offers. Lord help my grandson to understand Your message written in Your word and surround him with godly role models to learn from. I pray with my whole heart that he will submit his will to You early in his life and follow You all his days – even into eternity. May Your Presence go before him and behind him and through his life, may people around him see Your glory. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Please, please keep my grandson out of harm’s way.
Lord God, my grandson is a treasure to me. Because he is active and challenges his abilities all the time, it seems he is always bruised or scraped or worse. Lord in Your mercy, please protect him from life-changing injuries. Caution him when he is not thinking, slow him down when he is doing something dangerous. Give the adults around him energy and awareness to supervise him adequately. Also let us be quick to comfort him when he does get hurt. Lord, it seems like he is always doing something daring, and I pray You would surround him with divine protection against broken bones, serious accidents and deadly diseases. Thank You Lord, Amen.

Praying for my grandson and his family.
Lord, I pray for (grandson’s name) family today. Bless his mom and dad and help them to find joy in being parents. Let them be grateful for their children realizing they are gifts from You. Give them a heart full of love for each other and for You. I pray that their marriage is satisfying and no thought of divorce will ever come into their minds.
Please give their family the housing, food and clothing they need.
Lord, I pray for my grandson’s father. Let him be an excellent role model for his son(s). Teach him how to be loving, attentive, and set a high standard. No matter what, please let him be intimately involved in my grandson’s life, because boys need their dad. Make up for any lack he experienced in his own childhood, so he is pouring from a full cup.
Let there be peace between brothers and sisters. Let them support each other and be kind to one another. I pray that each member of the family will feel loved and valued by the others and I promise I will do my part to show them my love, too. Amen.

Emotional health.
I’ve read some concerning articles lately saying that our boys are not doing all that well.
In some ways, this news points to the advantage of following Jesus and not the world. I’m going to be praying for my grandson to identify as a child of the Most High God instead of the confusing, mixed messages about “what it means to be a man” coming from other places right now.
Jesus, I don’t know what emotional challenges my grandson is facing as he grows up right now, but You do. Please help him to grow up emotionally healthy. Fill him with love, joy, peace and kindness. Spare him from being lonely or disconnected from people. If he is having a problem, I pray You would lead him to professionals who can give him hope. It is horrible to think of losing a child to suicide and I pray that thought would never enter his mind.
Help him to find that balance between being strong instead of acting out toxic masculinity. Give him role models of men who are willing to express their emotions. Lead him to people who are safe to talk to. I pray Lord that I won’t pass on anything damaging to my grandsons based on my own upbringing.
Jesus wrap your arms around (grandson’s name) and let him be convinced of Your love for him. Guide me in how to show my undying love for him, too. Amen.
His identity as a boy/ young man.
It’s never too early to pray for our grandchildren to be secure in their identity as boys or girls. In fact, I hope they never question it! I say that because anything else is a hard road for that person, personally and in society. Kids will have enough challenges without wondering who they are at this basic level. Let’s pray for our grandsons!
Creator God,
You have placed my grandson, this adorable boy, into our family and we are so thankful. Please let him accept and enjoy who You have made him to be. Don’t ever let him question that he is male. Keep him from whispers of the enemy that might tell him otherwise. Shield him from messages in the media, at school or from friends who might lead him away from who he truly is. Lord, embed these two things in his heart: that he is a chosen child of God and that he is a boy who will grow up to be a man. Thank You Lord that this is true. Amen.
Lord, grant my grandson health, both mental and physical.
Prayers for my grandson’s mental health.
Lord, Your ways are higher than our ways and Your creation is magnificent. This is especially true when it comes to our bodies. There is so little we understand about our brains, though, so I just pray you wire my grandson’s brain the way it should be. Protect him from head injuries and let his brain learn and grow smart. Spare him from anxiety, depression, and especially self-destructive thoughts. I pray he would not be interested in drugs, especially those that lead to addiction. Keep those far from him, I pray.
Please let his parents quickly spot any symptoms of mental illness. Let them be wise in seeking treatment. Lord, it is heartbreaking to think of my precious grandson having any serious problems so I ask that, in Your mercy, You will spare him. In any case, though, I know You will be with us. Let our family love and accept this boy for who he is and be an excellent source of support for him. Amen.
Physical development/ Puberty.
Lord please let (grandson’s name) be healthy. Let his physical development be normal and on schedule. Let his vision and hearing be normal, too. Cause his immune system to be strong.
Lord if there is any condition that runs through his family line, please spare him from it. Let his parents have the medical resources to prevent or minimize his condition. In your mercy, Lord, let him rise above whatever physical weakness he may have.
And Lord, please help (grandson’s name) navigate through puberty. Let him accept the changes in his body. Give him access to accurate information about his development and let his parents be approachable when he has questions. Please don’t let him be silent because of fear. Lord, puberty is a turbulent time, and I pray you will calm his emotions, and help him to think clearly about girls. Keep showing him who he is to You. Amen.

Lord I am praying for my grandson’s success in school.
Father, I pray that (grandson’s name) will have a fair chance at life. A good education will make it easier for him. Lord, I pray his parents will choose the right school (or homeschool program) for him. Lord, assign him to teachers who see his unique abilities and will help develop them.
If he has any areas of difficulty, please teach him perseverance. Teach him how to accept help humbly without feeling bad about himself for needing assistance.
Lord, kids get so busy with school activities, sports, music, and church. I pray Lord, there will be a balance for (grandson’s name) so he has opportunities to develop his skills, but without the stress that too much busyness can bring.
Please let his school be safe from shootings. Gun violence at school is happening more and more. Please protect my grandson and all the students at his school. In addition, I pray no child will be bullied at his school. Let there be a culture of kindness and please show my grandson how to reach out to those who need a friend.
Help him to find favor with teachers, coaches and other students. Allow him to have friends – both boys and girls. Most of all, let him learn what he needs to know to be a leader in your kingdom. Amen.
Praying for my grandson’s friends.
Lord Jesus, You had 12 good friends when You were here on earth and I ask that You will provide (grandson’s name) with devoted friends, too. Give him kind, loyal friends who challenge him to be his best self. Help him to find that balance between fitting in with a group and staying authentic to who You have made him to be. Let my grandson be an empathetic, dependable friend, too.
Show him how to be a light to those who are lonely or struggling. Teach him how to share his faith in a compelling way. Thank You Lord for this child. Amen.
Praying for my grandson’s future wife and children.
Jesus, if it be Your will, I pray that my grandson will get married someday. Bring he and his wife together, in Your perfect timing, in Your perfect way. Lord, I pray for this young woman today – that she will find You and love You and want to follow You all her days. Please, Lord, give her a stable, loving family with parents who are good role models for who she can become.
Lord, let (grandson’s name) be patient in waiting for his wife. Help him not to rush into a relationship with just anyone or get serious with a girl who is not “the one”. While he is waiting, Lord, teach him what it means to be an excellent husband and loving father.
I pray for their future marriage – that they will love and respect each other and honor You by raising children who know You well. May Your blessing be on the future generations of my grandchildren and their grandchildren and so on. Thank You Lord that You care for us. Amen.
Our grandsons need their grandmas prayers for health, for protection and in order to mature into the men God intends them to be. As they grow from toddlers to boys to teens, our prayers may change, too. However, 2 Timothy 1:7 will always be a sound verse to pray over our boys. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” NKJV
May God bless your grandson(s).
I’d love to hear from you—what kinds of prayers are you lifting up for your granddaughter? Feel free to share in the comments and encourage one another on this meaningful journey.
