Prayer for a Grandson: 61 Ways to Surround Him in Love and Protection

Every grandchild needs prayer for faith, protection, and a heart that follows Jesus. Whether you have a grandson or a granddaughter, many of the prayers you pray will be the same. But as I thought about my grandsons, I realized there are also some areas where I wanted to pray with a more specific focus.

My grandsons are still little—not even in school yet. Still, they are fearless! They climb higher than they should, walk toward the street without a care in the world, and jump off furniture in ways that would send me straight to urgent care if I tried it.

I pray often for their physical safety.

But as they grow, there will be so much more to pray about.

Boys today face pressures and confusing messages about strength, identity, relationships, and what it means to become a godly man. As grandparents, we have the privilege of bringing all of those concerns before the Lord.

By offering prayer for a grandson, you can be a faithful influence as you bring his name before God every day.

Where do you start?

Prayer for a Grandson Made Easy

A prayer jar is a simple way to pray regularly and intentionally for your grandson.

Write different prayer topics on slips of paper and place them in a jar. Then, during your prayer or devotional time, pull out a slip and use it as a prompt.

If the slip says “To choose godly friends,” for example, spend a few moments praying specifically about the friendships in your grandson’s life.

You can make your own slips by cutting up Post-it notes, notebook paper, or whatever you have on hand. Or you can use the printable prayer slips I’ve created for you. I’ll show you those in just a minute.

Why Use a Prayer Jar?

Some days, I sit down to pray for my grandchildren, and my mind goes blank. Other days, I realize I’m praying the same things over and over again.

Keep them safe. Help them grow in faith. Bless their day.

Those are good prayers! But what about their friendships? Their character? The choices they’ll make someday? Their health, identity, wisdom, and future?

A prayer jar full of ideas gives you a prompt when you don’t know what to pray for your grandson and reminds you of areas you might otherwise overlook.

It also provides a beautiful visual reminder to keep praying for your grandson(s).

Our Prayers Rise Like Incense

One of my favorite biblical pictures of prayer is found in Revelation:

Revelation 5:8 CSB

When he took the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and golden bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

I love the image of our prayers being like incense before God.

Psalm 141:2 uses similar imagery: “Let my prayer be set before You as incense…”

That’s why you’ll see watercolor incense vessels throughout the prayer slips I created. They’re a little reminder that every time we bring our grandsons before God, our prayers matter to Him.

So let’s fill our prayer jars—and lift plenty of prayers for our grandchildren!

Prayer Jar Ideas for Your Grandson

Your prayer jar doesn’t have to be fancy. You can use a pretty glass jar, a pitcher, a ceramic container, or something you already have around the house. You could add your grandson’s name, tie on a ribbon or tag, or simply leave it as it is.

I made this blue one here by painting a plain Mason jar with acrylic paint. The band around the top is just braided macramé cord, and I used Canva to print the tag.

This pitcher is a little big, but it was so pretty I had to get it. I found it at Walmart. Then just made the tag myself.

These multi-colored Mason jars were on Amazon’s website. You could use one color for prayers and another to collect the prayed-for slips. The next blog post I’m planning to write is Prayers for a Granddaughter, so if you get these jars now, you’ll be ahead of the game.

And don’t worry about making beautiful prayer slips, either. In that post, I simply cut up Post-it notes. Notebook paper works just as well. But for my grandson’s prayer jar, I wanted to create something special.

How to Use the Prayer Slips

Print the pages and cut the slips apart. Add them to your prayer jar, and you’re ready. There are 4 pages of prayer slips, plus a blank page for you to use for your personal prayer concerns.

Each day when you stop to pray, pull out one slip.

Suppose today’s says:

“That he chooses godly friends.”

When you start to pray for a grandson, say his name and begin there. Pray about his current friends. Pray for friendships he hasn’t even formed yet. Ask God to bring people into his life who will encourage him, make him laugh, tell him the truth, and help him grow closer to Jesus.

The slip is simply a starting point. Let your prayer grow from there.

After you’ve prayed through all 61 slips—and any personal ones you’ve added—you will have prayed over many different areas of your grandson’s life.

Then put them all back in the jar and begin again.

Don’t Throw Away Those Prayer Slips

Here’s one more thing I like to do.

After I use a prayer slip, I put it in a pencil pouch like the kind kids use at school. Since my prayer journal is a three-ring binder, the pouch fits right inside.

You could also write a date or note on the back of a slip when you see God answer that prayer.

Imagine looking back through those slips years from now and remembering the things you prayed about when your grandson was little—and seeing some of the ways God answered.

Constant Prayer for a Grandson

As grandparents, we can make a difference in our grandchildren’s lives by faithfully bringing them before God.

We won’t be able to control every circumstance our grandsons encounter. We can’t make their decisions for them, and we don’t know what their futures hold.

But we can pray.

Faithfully.

Day after day. Year after year.

We can keep bringing their names before God.

One little slip. One grandson’s name. One prayer for a grandson lifted before God like incense.
