Check Out this Easy Way to Offer Prayer for a Granddaughter

I have this cute picture of my granddaughter and me holding hands and walking across a parking lot. Right before we left the house, she changed clothes so she could wear her purple dress – like Grandma’s. So, there we are, in our summer dresses and pink sandals, ready for whatever comes our way.

That one picture sums up the joy and responsibility of having a granddaughter.

Your granddaughter wants to be like you. You are a special person in her life, and she’s watching you to see how to navigate. Wouldn’t it be nice to pass on our best qualities and hide the rest?

That’s why, in prayer for a granddaughter, I think asking for God’s help in being a good example is most important.

And that’s just one of the many things I pray for her. Because there’s so much I want to cover in prayer, I’ve found it helpful to have a simple way to keep those prayers in front of me.

Prayer Jars Make Praying for a Granddaughter Easy

I love my prayer jars. Every couple of months, I load up my granddaughter’s prayer jar with prayer slips covering a wide range of things I want to pray for —her safety, her walk with God, her relationships, and the person she is becoming.

Then each day, I pull out a prayer slip and pray about that topic. If I’m in a hurry, I stop there. But usually, that little prayer slip is just the beginning. It gets me warmed up and ready to pray through the rest of my prayer list.

Instead of praying the same thing over and over, a prayer jar helps you remember all the important areas of your granddaughter’s life. Its presence on your nightstand is a gentle call to daily prayer, too.

Prayer Jar Ideas

Prayer jars don’t have to be complicated. You can use a pretty cup, a Mason jar, or even a small box to hold your prayer slips.

I got this mug as a gift. I have been using it for tea, but it makes a lovely prayer jar, too.

In case you’re not into so much pink, I found these prayer baskets on Amazon. So cute!

If the idea of prayer jars is new to you, I have a whole post about how to make and use one. You can get as fancy as you want to.

What Goes Inside?

You can make your own prayer slips by cutting up Post-it notes or notebook paper, or use the printable prayer slips I’ve created for you. I’ll show you those in just a minute.

The prayer slips are meant to be prompts, not complete prayers. For example, if the slip you pick says “To Have the Courage to Be Herself,” spend a few moments praying about your granddaughter’s confidence and sense of self. Thank God for all the delightful qualities you see in her. Pray that she recognizes the gifts He has given her, and that she has the courage to be the person He created her to be.

Don’t Throw Those Prayer Slips Away

After I use a prayer slip, I save it in a pencil pouch like the kind kids use at school. Since my prayer journal is a three-ring binder, the pouch fits right inside. This way, I can reuse them by filling up the prayer jar when it is empty.

If you like to keep track of your prayers, you can write the date of your prayer on the back.

61 Printable Prayer Prompts for Your Granddaughter

I created 61 prayer slips to encourage you in prayer for a granddaughter—enough for two full months of daily prayer.

Example of page 1 of the downloadable prayer slips from the post Prayer for a Granddaughter. There are 2 columns of 8 slips each. At the top of the page is a Bible verse from John 8:12 about oil lamps. Each box has a title, such as Prayer for My Granddaughter's Faith, along with a small picture of an oil lamp and a suggestion on what to pray.

The printable includes prayer for a granddaughter in these areas:

Faith • Character • Relationships • Spiritual Protection • Daily Protection • Health• Her Identity • Growing into Her Own • The Future

Some prayers are simple:

To sleep well.

Others are more specific:

To develop a healthy relationship with food.

And some I pray for the future of the girls I love:

Bless her with loyal and supportive friends.

Why Oil Lamps?

You’ll notice a little oil lamp beside each of the 61 prayers for your granddaughter. I chose the lamp because oil lamps remind us of God’s light and His presence. They also bring to mind Jesus’ parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1–13. Five of the young women were wise and prepared, keeping oil for their lamps as they waited for the bridegroom.

Isn’t that what we want for our granddaughters? We want them to be wise, prepared, and spiritually strong—to carry the light of their faith with them wherever life takes them.

And, of course, the symbolism works the other way around, too. My granddaughter is already a bright light in my life!

I hope these little oil lamps will become a meaningful reminder as you pray for your granddaughter, too.

Prayer Slips for Your Grandsons

Rest assured, we did not forget about the boys. I have also created 61 prayer slips specifically to use for praying for your grandsons. Find his prayer slips here.

Prayer for a Granddaughter

Your granddaughters may not always know how often you pray for them. They won’t hear every prayer whispered over their friendships, their safety, their faith, or the women they are becoming.

But those prayers matter.

A prayer jar is such a simple thing—a jar filled with little slips of paper. But each slip is a reminder to bring one more part of your granddaughter’s life before God.

Someday, my granddaughter may outgrow matching purple dresses and pink sandals. She may not always look to Grandma to see what she’s wearing or how she does things. But I hope she never outgrows my prayers.

So fill your jar, pull out a slip, and start praying. One little prayer at a time, we can cover our granddaughters in prayer as they grow into the women God created them to be.
