Faith Filled Back-to-School Prayers for Your Grandchildren’s Successful Year
Updated: December 9, 2025
I always loved going back to school. New school supplies, friends in class, and the anticipation of what we were going to learn. My poor brother dreaded school. Not even new shoes or the thought of Friday pizza days could cheer him up. He was “doing time” until Christmas break. I’m sure my parents whispered a few back-to-school prayers asking for a trouble-free year.
Regardless of whether your grandkids love it or hate it, you are wise to start praying for a successful school year now. School impacts so much of a young person’s life! Help your grandchildren go back to school in the best way possible – covered in prayer.

Which school is best?
Not to sound like a grandma, ha, ha, but when I was a kid, we went to our neighborhood school. There was no such thing as a school of choice. Today, many cities have educational consultants you can hire to explain your school options and help you pick the best option for your child.
Modern parenting is very complicated.
Where will they go to school?
A good place to start back-to-school prayers is by praying that your children and their spouses make the best possible decision about where your grandchildren should go to school. This decision can have a big impact on a child, so let’s pray for God’s guidance in picking the right one.
Listen to the first prayer below.
Heavenly Father, our days are in Your hands. I am grateful that You desire the well-being of all Your creation, including my grandkids. Lord, I invite You into the process of deciding where (children’s names) will go to school this year. You are all-knowing, and I pray You guide their parents to a school that aligns with Your purpose. Let them find the right school for my grandchildren, with the best teachers, where they will meet genuine friends. Please provide any money they need for tuition. Lord, I ask for Your wisdom for this important decision. Amen.
Back-to-home-school
Lord, if it is Your will for (grandchild’s name) to learn at home, then I ask You to make it possible. Let there be unity between parents and children about this choice. Please guide them in choosing a curriculum. I pray this school year will be a time of family growth and bonding. Please let my grandchild learn the things he/she need to and discover the abilities and talents You have given them.
In place of classroom friends, please provide them with loyal friends who are fun-loving, honest, and kind. Let them grow in knowledge of the world around them, but more importantly, in knowledge of You. Amen.
God’s blessing on the new school year.
At the start of this new school year, I am grateful that my grandkids have access to an education. There are countries where girls just aren’t educated, or children leave school to go to work. These are all prayer concerns in their own right, and I may try to remind my grandchildren of these issues in a kind, gentle way. Happily, my grandchildren do get to go to school, and I invite God to be there with them.
Lord Jesus, thank You that my grandkids have the opportunity to go to school. Public education is not perfect, but I’m grateful that they can learn to read and write. Let them see You in their science lessons. Remind them that You are the Creator of everything they learn in Geography and that You have been there, directing history. Help them to discover the abilities and talents that You have placed in each one of them. Let this be the best school year for them yet.
Please watch over them as they start their new school routine. Walk with them to class, be with them at lunch. Provide them with loyal friends who are fun-loving, honest, and kind. Let them grow in knowledge of the world around them, but more importantly, in knowledge of You. Amen.
Back-to-school prayers after Christmas Break.

Loving God, it was good to have a pause in December and celebrate the birth of Jesus. But now it’s time for my grandkids to go back to school. You have brought them through to this midpoint in the school year, and I am grateful.
Lord, please help them adjust to any changes in their school day when they get back from vacation. Maybe this means a new schedule or new kids in their classroom. Whatever it is, remind them that You are an ever-present help who is always with them.
I pray my grandchildren will have a fresh, optimistic attitude about going to school this semester. Let them have new insights into the areas they struggle with. Let them excel in subjects that come easily.
Please stand guard over their school buildings – and all the schools in our country – so this epidemic of shootings will end. I pray there will be no bullying on their campuses so that no child is afraid to go to school.
Finally, I pray that my grandchildren realize the most important book they open is Your Bible. We trust in Your care and live in Your grace, and we are grateful. Amen.
Back-to-school prayers for character.
Is there a child alive who hasn’t pushed the boundaries when it comes to finishing homework or acting up in class? Testing the rules is part of growing up. I can accept that my angelic grandchildren may let their halos slip once in a while, but I pray they never fall off permanently.
For all the grandkids going back to school.
Lord, I pray that my grandchild will develop Your character in their role as a student. Teach them to be respectful of their teachers and other staff members. Help them work hard in class and on their homework. I pray that they will not cheat or do anything dishonest at school. Lord, show them how to be humble in subjects that come easily and how to be persistent in those that are hard. Thank You Lord, for the fresh start of a new school year. Amen.

For the ones who are struggling
Heavenly Father, last year (grandchild’s name) struggled in school. Now that it is back to school time, I pray they can make a fresh start socially. That other students will be kind and give them a chance to be friends. I pray for a fresh start academically. Please help (grandchild’s name) understand (school subject) and learn what they need to know this year. Don’t let this challenge become a label or an identity.
Please don’t let my grandchild become discouraged with school in general. Give them hope and tenacity. Bless them with at least one place at school where they can thrive and be successful. Thank You Lord, Amen.
For the advanced kids
Lord God, it is a blessing that my grandchild is quick to learn and likes school. I pray they will be challenged in class this year and develop the abilities that You have placed in them. Please let them be patient when the pace in class is slow. Please let their teacher know how to keep them engaged. Give the school resources to develop the bright minds in their classrooms. I pray (grandchild’s name) will stay humble even when they excel; remembering that all good gifts come from You. Amen.

For who they are as classmates
Most likely to succeed? Class clown? Only the kids know for sure.
Lord, I pray (grandchild’s name) will set the standard for being a model classmate. Let them find favor with their teachers and coaches. Let them be willing to try in class, patient with lessons, and uncomplaining about work. Show them how to encourage others. Let them be unafraid to ask for help when they need it.
Please let my grandchildren find favor with the other students in their classes so they can shine Your light to those around them. Amen.
Back-to-school prayers for protection.
So much of class work now is online. Some schools even give their students iPads as a learning tool. Because of all the information our grandkids can access, good and bad, you might want to read this post next: Powerful Prayers for Grandkids and Online Safety.
Let them know what is and isn’t true.
I guess one good thing about homeschool is that the family is in charge of what their children are learning. In public school, kids can learn about all sorts of things. Sometimes actually mandated by the school district. Rather than allow our children to be confused, let’s invite the Lord to protect them and teach them His truth.
Lord, You are all-knowing with perfect, unchanging wisdom. But here on earth, Your children see only dimly. I pray my grandchildren will learn and believe the truth – Your truth – about creation, evolution, marriage, and who You made them to be.
I pray my grandchildren will bring questions to their parents when what they’re taught at school is different than what they’re taught at church. Please direct these kids away from books that push ideas not from You. Help us to treat others with love, even when we disagree with their beliefs.
Lord, show my grandkids how to hold on to Your truth even when they are the only ones. Give them healthy, inquisitive minds that seek Your truth and find it. Amen.

Protection when they’re going to and from school.
God, I am grateful that You are full of goodwill for my grandkids as they head back to school. Whether they are walking, riding the bus, or driving to school, please guard them from accidents and danger. Cause the drivers around their school to be extra careful, too.
Be a barrier around my grandchildren and keep evil people away from them. With Your power, I ask that You bring them home safely every day of this school year. Amen.
If your grandkids are old enough to be learning to drive, this is for you: 8 prayers for new drivers. God bless you and your nerves.
Prayer for their School
Lord, I pray that Your hand of protection will be on (school name) as the kids head back to school. I pray Your Holy Spirit will fill the halls and classrooms, so that even out into the parking lot, people will know You are present.
Let there be a culture of respect among the teachers and students. Provide school resources so that the students can learn. And please let this school be a safe place from gun violence, bullying, and evil people. Bring any ugly plan to light and destroy it. Let this be a safe place for all the children there so they can do their job of learning and grown to be the people You have created them to be. Amen.
Teachers
God bless the teachers at (grandchild’s name) school. Bless them with joy in their calling, with resources to teach and love for their students. Please give them energy and the will to do an excellent job in the classroom this year. Let them see those with extra needs and Lord, please provide these teachers the supplies they need to help.
I pray that all the staff at this school are people of high moral character. God keep the administration from employing anyone who would harm a child. Let each teacher find renewed satisfaction in their work this year. Thank you Lord, especially for the ones who will teach my grandchildren. May they find You in the faces of their students. Amen.
As the school year begins, your prayers can become a steady source of strength, comfort, and blessing for your grandchildren. These back-to-school prayers may seem simple, but they carry eternal weight—inviting God’s presence into classrooms, friendships, challenges, and victories. Keep praying boldly. You may not walk the school halls with your grandchildren, but your prayers go where you cannot. And that kind of faithful love leaves a legacy no textbook ever could.
