The trick in praying for your grandchildren’s protection is not to give in to fear. Instead, we are going to cover them in prayer and trust God for their safety.

If I could, I would wrap my grandchildren in bubble wrap so they would never get hurt. Especially after I listen to the news. I know growing up completely sheltered would leave these kids unprepared for real life. But at least they would be safe!

There is a better way, as I’m sure you can guess. We can pray to the all-knowing, loving God of the Universe to watch over our grandkids and protect them from dangers we know about and the ones known only to Him.

This is a bright blue brush stroke with part of the Bible verse from James 4:2 on it. It says "you do not have because you do not ask God." This is meant to encourage grandparents to keep praying for your grandchildren's protection.

God sees everything and has great plans for our grandchildren. It is up to us to pray those plans into existence however. We need to align ourselves with the Lord’s will as we pray for our grandchildren’s protection, so that God can accomplish his purpose in this area.

6 focus areas for praying for your grandchildren’s protection.

I’ve organized these protection prayers starting in close by praying for an individual child. Then we move outward to prayer for their home and then their neighborhood. Next you have prayer for your grandchildren’s protection at the places they go and the people who are around them. Finally, there is a “big picture” prayer for their city.

Step One.

Prayer for (grandchild’s name).

Dear God, I lift (grandchild’s name) to you. Please protect this child spiritually. I pray they will learn about you early in life and choose to follow you soon. Guard them from any lies of the enemy that would trip them up. Lord protect them so their spirit is never wounded and let them walk toward you as a child of the light every day.

Please protect him/her physically. I pray against accidents, illness and intentional harm. It’s unthinkable to me that someone would purposely want to hurt a child, and yet that is the world we live in sometimes. Lord, be a shield for (grandchild’s name).

Please let them grow strong and healthy. I pray they will have the food they need and that they want to eat the right food to be healthy. Let them have access to ethical doctors and dentists who have your wisdom and will treat any problems correctly.

Please protect my grandchild from any mental illness. Remove this possibility from them entirely. Let their minds be strong and healthy without anxiety, depression or serious mental illness. Help them to feel your love so that they can be emotionally healthy too. I pray they will have a good self-image without pride. Please keep them from traumatic events that would harm them emotionally, physically or mentally.

Thank you, God, for your care and protection for this child today. I pray that anything that happens to them today is filtered through your care and protection.

You are a good father, and I appreciate you taking care of me and my family all these years. Lord, help me to remember all the ways you have protected me and my children so I can pass these lessons on to my grandchildren. Amen.

Praying for your grandchildren’s protection at home.

Dear Jesus. Thank you for providing my grandchildren with a home. Let it always be a place of safety where they feel secure and enjoy the blessing of a happy family life. Let there be love and goodwill between siblings and cousins in this family.

Guard them from accidents in their home, especially on the stairs, in the kitchen and in the bathroom. Please alert their parents to any dangers that are present in their living space and help them find a solution.  Please prevent fires, wind, and rain from destroying their home. Let their home be free from toxins that would harm their health. Lord, I am praying for my grandchildren’s protection around any pets, around all medicine and ask that You would keep them from touching any firearms that might be in their home. Please keep them safe at my house, too. Show me any place I need to attend to so that it is child-safe.

Jesus, I pray that no person would come into their home with evil intentions to steal, kill or harm my grandchildren. Let your Holy Spirit be present in all the rooms of their house and help me to teach them that our final and best home is in Heaven with you. Amen.

Their Neighborhood.

Lord, please keep my grandchildren safe in their neighborhood. Protect them from accidents and danger in their yard and in parks and playgrounds. Let them remember the safety rules they have been taught. Keep them safe from being harmed by cars and in parking lots.

I pray that you will protect all the children in their neighborhood and let my grandkids get along with neighbor kids. Let them find kind, loyal friends who have their back and be that same good friend in return. Let the adults in their neighborhood watch over all the children with loving intent. End any violence or crime around them today. I pray your Holy Spirit will rest in their area so that any evil will flee.

Give my grandchildren wisdom to navigate their world. Be their shield of protection today. Thank you Lord, Amen.

Step Two.

Now we’ve created a safeguard around our grandchildren where they spend most of their time. But the older they get, the more they venture out to places we can’t control: day care, school, lessons, even church. They meet people who may or may not be trustworthy. Sometimes this causes me worry deep in my grandma heart. Even so, the Lord is faithful to defend our grandchildren. Let’s pray that they are constantly under His wing (see Psalm 91 vs. 4).

Mark 9:36-37 NKJV

Then He took a little child and set him in the midst of them. And when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them, “Whoever receives one of these little children in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me.”

Praying for your grandchildren’s protection: People

Dear God, I pray that protection for my grandchildren will come through the people in their lives.

I pray for my children and their spouses as they shoulder the responsibilities of being parents. Let them teach their children who you are by being excellent, loving parents. Lord, work in this family to bring peace, respect and unity between brothers and sisters.

I pray that my extended family will want what is best for these children. Lord please don’t let them harm my grandchildren by things they say or do.

Lord, please bless all the adults who have leadership roles in my grandchildren’s lives: teachers, coaches, pastors, day care staff, and babysitters. Lord, I pray that all these people feel valued in their jobs. Please remind them daily how precious all their students are. Let them be honorable in the lessons they teach each day and wise in how to reach each child. Make them responsible, watchful and discerning. Let them speak life over my grandchildren and teach them what they need to know to navigate in this world. Let my grandchildren be physically, mentally and emotionally safe in their care.

Please prevent the organizations my grandchildren are a part of from hiring anyone who is not of high moral character. If there is an evil person anywhere near them, bring it to light before anything bad happens and remove them.

I pray for my grandchildren’s neighbors, friends, and friend’s parents. That they would be trustworthy people. Give my grandchild favor with the people around them so they can see you, Lord,  through them.

In Acts 7:46 we learn that David found favor in your sight. Please let my grandchildren find favor with you God. Open their eyes to who you are and allow them to find joy in your ways.

And last, let me be the best grandma I can be. Let them always be safe in my care. Amen.

Protect the places they go.

Lord I pray you will protect my grandchildren in all the places they go. I am grateful that You see where they are going and what they are doing every day and that you are with them.

Jesus, please protect my grandchildren as they go places in the car. Keep them safe from car crashes, or being hit by a car or being lured into a car by anyone. Lord, your arm is mighty to save and I pray that you will.

Please let them be safe at day care and school. Protect them from school shootings, accidents at school and bullying. Let the administration and teachers be quick to spot trouble and be bold to act. Let my grandkids find favor with their teachers and be a light for other students. Please cause them to be friends with children of your choosing.

And Lord, there are so many other places they go out in public like playgrounds. stores, lessons, and sports practice and bad things can happen anywhere. Stand guard, Lord, and keep them from being kidnapped ever. It is unthinkable that it would happen in my family, and yet it happens everyday to someone. Please put a stop to this. Let our police win the war against human trafficking.

And I am sorry that this is true, our children need protection even in our churches. I pray that you will put an end to this evil. Please Lord, fight against anyone who would harm children in a church setting. Alert pastors and staff if any bad seeds are present and let them be removed forever. Protect my grandchildren from anyone who might want to harm them in your house, Lord.

I am so grateful to you Father, that you love these kids even more than I do and that you are perfectly capable of keeping them safe. Amen.

Step Three.

Prayers for your grandchildren’s protection: Their City

Father, I pray you will bless (city where your grandchildren live). Bless the children there, their families, their schools and churches. Let the churches teach your word and your truth and please make them influential in (city name).

Let the streets and neighborhoods be safe from violence and disease. Let the leaders of (city) have the best interest of the people at heart and not be greedy or motivated by selfishness. Give them Your creative ideas on how to manage their city. I pray there is food and decent housing for all the people there.

Lord it seems like every city has its problems – drugs, violence, poverty, just to name a few. I am relieved that you see every situation like this. I ask that you bring an end to these problems for the people in (city). Rescue those caught up in drugs and violence. Let neighbors live in peace and have respect for each other. Let this be a Godly city where children can grow up knowing you. Thank you, Amen.

Alright. I think I will sleep better tonight knowing that God is in control. And that I have done my small part to bring His will into effect for my grandchildren. Praise to God from Whom All Blessings Flow.
