My prayer life is like the ocean tide. Sometimes it is high tide – with joy in my Bible reading and spiritual prayers connecting to God. Other times, it is low tide, when I don’t stop to pray or I don’t know what to pray about. I watch my spirit life fading, and I feel dried up and empty.

I suspect we all go through this.

That’s why I developed this monthly prayer calendar. Because it’s important to me to pray for my darling grandkids every day, despite the level of the tide. I’m all for anything that can help me.

On those days when prayer is hard, pick a day from the prayer calendar and use it to get started.

Week 1 are prayers for your grandchildren’s faith. Prayer for each child’s salvation is the most important because eternity is waiting for us. Week 2 is prayer for their family since this is a primary influence on a child. Week 3 is for their health, school, and safety. Week 4 has prayers for their character. Week 5 finishes out the prayer calendar with hopeful prayer about how things should be.

If you are a new grandparent some of these prayers may not apply, but there is a post offering prayers for newborns. And there’s a post on prayers for toddlers.

Praying for generations to come

Psalm 102:18 NIV
Let this be written for a future generation,
That a people not yet created may praise the Lord

Psalm 102:28 NIV
The children of your servants will live in your presence;
Their descendants will be established before you.

Psalm 102 is mainly a lament from the author who is dealing with difficulty in their life. As the author talks to God, he offers us guidance on how to pray for future generations of our family.

We can pray that our family – starting with our children and extending to our grandchildren and their grandchildren – will praise the Lord. And from verse 28, we can pray that our future family will be established before God.

In other words, that our great-grandchildren will know and love the Lord and choose to let Him lead them. That they will teach their children to do the same. And that they will find many reasons to praise God, no matter what life looks like in 100 years. Our prayers for the generations can be our legacy! The prayer calendar can help you get started.

Eternal God,
It is a comfort to know that Your kingdom has no beginning and no end. I thank You for Your presence with me now and ask that You be with all the generations of my family into the future. I pray that all my descendants will come to know the saving power of Jesus and choose His ways for themselves. Let our family be Your servants and shining lights for the people around us.

Lord, as each child grows up, let them find the person You have for them to marry. Let them have a strong marriage in which to raise children and let them raise these kids to know You. I pray they will value Your word and apply it to their lives. Let them all be pleasing to You.

Please protect each one from evil with Your divine power and in Your mercy. Let us all be together in Your heaven forever. Amen.

Someone prayed for me

I know that I have benefited from the prayers of past generations. Growing up, my family went to church  – my parents taught Sunday school, dad was on the Finance Committee, and I was in the children’s choir. But starting in junior high (as it was called then), we drifted away as a family. I, personally, wanted nothing to do with anything as uncool as church.

And yet. I still loved my Bible. I still believed in God, although I knew He wasn’t that happy with the things I was doing. And I had many, many instances of divine protection. Looking back, I’m sure it was due to the prayers of both of my grandmothers and one of our dear neighbors.

Fortunately, I came back in my twenties. I’m doing my best to follow Jesus. And I’m praying for my grandchildren, because I know it will make a difference.

Here is another article on generation prayer. I didn’t write it, but I wish I had.

Our Prayers Never Expire

Revelation 5:8 ESV
(from the vision of Heaven that God showed John)
And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

Each prayer that we say is stored in a golden bowl in the throne room of Heaven. The prayers we pray over our grandchildren today go on and on to protect them and keep them on the right path. Even if we live far away from our grandkids, our prayers reach out to bring good to their lives. That inspires me to pray. How about you?

Make sure to download the 31 days of prayer calendar. 31 prayers that can go into “your golden bowl”.
