Prayers for Pregnant Mothers: A Grandmother’s Gratitude for God’s Gift of New Life
There is something especially tender about watching a new life grow when you’re a grandmother. We’ve lived long enough to know that babies are never ordinary—they are miracles, entrusted to families by the hand of God. Each pregnancy in our family feels like a quiet reminder that the Lord is still creating, still blessing, still weaving His purposes through the generations.
As a grandma, my heart overflows with gratitude for the mothers who carry these precious gifts. Daughter or daughter-in-law, I am grateful to both. I find myself praying intentionally, asking God to protect, strengthen, and surround both mother and child with His peace. These prayers are offered from a place of wonder and thanksgiving, trusting the One who gives life and holds our families in His loving care.

A Gift from Above.
Dear Lord, we are expecting a new baby in our family, and I am grateful to You for this gift. Thank You for this new little life; not yet born but soon to be a part of our family forever. Boy or girl, I am humbled that You are expanding our family. Let us remember that this child was and always will be Yours, and may we teach them all we know about You. Amen.
What Is a Good Prayer to Say for a Pregnant Mother?
As a grandmother, it is truly a privilege to pray for the expectant mothers in my family. I remember how anxious I felt during my first pregnancy, worried about nearly everything. By the time my second baby came along, I was more confident, but life was busier, with more distractions and far less time set aside for prayer.
Now, in the grandma season of life, I’m grateful to have both the desire and the time to pray intentionally over each of my grandchildren, even before they are born.
I like to pray like this:
Father God, thank You that (parents’ names) are welcoming a new baby into their family. Thank You for (mother’s name) and her willingness to carry this child, a precious gift to our entire family. Lord, let her experience the sacredness of bringing new life into the world. As her body changes, remind her of the miracle You are forming within her. It is (mother’s name) who nurtures the body, but You who adds their soul.
Please give (parents’ names) wisdom and confidence as they step into their calling as parents. Help them remember that You are the Creator and Sustainer of all life—both theirs and their baby’s—and that You will be a faithful friend and provider for this child. Amen.

Tough Situations
Because life is the way it is, not every pregnancy comes at the perfect time. Some women may feel too old or too young. Some mothers may not be in a committed relationship. There are lots of hard situations. Your best bet is to encourage your daughter (daughter-in-law) to follow the example of Mary and Joseph and rely on God. Let Jesus show your kids how to bring beauty out of ashes.
Lord Jesus, I know You know the situation with (mother’s name). Please fill her heart with love for her baby, no matter what else is going on. Lord, I ask you to provide for her: food, housing, family support, and health care. Work in (both parent’s names) hearts so that they want what is best for their baby. Lead them to do what is right in your eyes. Lord, surround them with your loving care so that they know You are with them. Bring a perfect solution to this situation so that we see God’s work and have a story to tell. Amen.
How Do You Pray for a Healthy Pregnancy and Baby?
A mother’s body is beautifully designed by God to carry new life, and yet pregnancy can still be physically and emotionally demanding. Even when everything is going “as expected,” the discomforts and unknowns can quietly wear on an expecting mama. As a grandmother, I find myself praying often for strength, relief, and endurance for the women in my family during this season.
I also pray intentionally for the baby growing inside her. I don’t believe these tiny lives are left to chance. God is intimately involved in every detail of their formation, and He invites us to bring our hopes and concerns to Him in prayer. One gentle touch from the Lord can bring healing, protection, and peace—both for mother and child.
Dear God, please bless (mother’s name) with good health during each trimester of her pregnancy. In particular, spare her from morning sickness, gestational diabetes, anemia, and high blood pressure. Let her be able to carry this baby to full term and have a safe delivery. Give her doctors and health providers Your wisdom to guide them during her pregnancy and delivery.
Please, Lord, let (mother’s name) have the nutrition and rest she needs so that this baby has what it needs, too. Lord, please let this baby be healthy with good vision and hearing. And Lord, you know the continuing problems that run in our family. Please spare this new baby – let them be born free of these chains.
Lord, I lift mom and baby to you and ask for You to touch them with Your creative, miracle-working power to make them healthy these entire 9 months. Thank You Lord, for Your love and mercy towards us. Amen.

Prayers for Pregnant Mothers to Find Peace During Pregnancy
There can be so many things to worry about during pregnancy. First-time moms may worry that they’re not competent. Mothers with children already may worry about how they will care for another child. Everyone may worry about money or day care. A lot of reasons to stay awake at night mulling things over, when what those pregnant mothers need is restful sleep.
It is my privilege as a grandmother to pray for every good thing for this next generation. Let’s ask God for His favor on our pregnant daughters, and as ever, let’s pray that they come to trust God for everything.
Jesus, in Your mercy, please pour Your peace out on (mother) and her household. Let her home be a place of refuge from worry and stress. Let her pregnancy be a time of joy for her and her husband. Strengthen their relationship and draw them closer to You.
Reassure her and protect her from anxiety and depression. Give her emotional peace and rest. Lord, reveal Yourself as a faithful friend Who she can rely on. I pray she comes to know You in a new and deeper way during her pregnancy, so when she looks back on this time, she remembers how blessed she was. Amen.

Bible Verses to Pray Over a Pregnant Mother
I find it especially meaningful to pray God’s word over my daughters (daughters-in-law, if that is your case). I love the feeling of God’s power coming down to weave its way into my children’s lives. Here are some Bible verses to add to the prayers above. Praying these verses can be as simple as saying, “Dear Lord, it says in Your word…” Then repeat the verse and ask for the blessing in the verse for your daughter (daughter-in-law).
For Peace:
John 14:27 ESV
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
For anxiety:
Deuteronomy 31:8 NKJV
“And the LORD, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”
Philippians 4:19 ESV
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
For health:
3 John 1:2 ESV
Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.
For the Baby’ Development:
(I love this one!)
Psalm 139: 13-17 NKJV
For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;[fn]
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.
How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
Psalm 139 is a record of King David talking to God. It has many words of encouragement and hope. You can read all of Psalm 139 here.
A final prayer for pregnant daughters/daughters-in-law.
Dear God, I ask You to bless (mother’s name) and the baby in her womb. Because Your Word says we are fearfully and wonderfully made, I declare that this child will be made perfectly. Create their vision, hearing, and internal organs to function well. I ask You, Lord, to make their blood and bones function the way they should. Let their mind be sound.
Because Jesus came to free us from our chains, I declare that no family history of disease, mental illness, or addiction will come near this baby all the days of their life. Let this baby be free to start fresh patterns for themselves and their children.
Lord, I pray that from their mother’s womb, this baby will belong to You. Please God, let them be raised to know Your word and be led by Jesus through the Holy Spirit so they can fulfill every plan You have designed for them to do.
Lord, when the time comes for delivery, I declare strength and endurance over (daughter’s name). Please, God bless us with a safe and successful delivery. Lord, You have said You will be with us always, and I am grateful to know You will watch over this precious mother and her baby now and forever. Amen.
As grandparents, we may not be the ones carrying these babies, but we carry them in our prayers long before they are placed in our arms. What a gift it is to lift up the mothers in our families during this sacred season—to ask God to surround them with strength, peace, and His tender care. Each prayer we whisper is an act of love, and each moment of waiting is filled with His presence.
May these prayers remind you that God is at work in every detail of your growing family. The babies He is forming are precious beyond measure, and the mothers He has chosen for them are held firmly in His hands. As you pray, may your heart be filled with gratitude, trust, and quiet joy for the beautiful story He is still writing across the generations.
