Welcome to this inspiring collection of 22 Bible verses about grandchildren. These scriptures will guide you in the beautiful, God-given mission of sharing your faith with the next generation. Nurturing your grandchildren’s spiritual growth is a meaningful calling that will help them walk in God’s favor and wisdom as they grow in His kingdom.

Let’s start by reading Bible verses about grandchildren that show what they give to their grandparents. Then we can look at what grandparents give to their grandkids and then finish up with 3 stories of actual grandparents in the Bible and the lessons they teach.

Bible verses about grandchildren point us towards eternity.

Job 42:16 ESV

And after this Job lived 140 years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, four generations.

Psalm 128:6 ESV

May you see your children’s children!
Peace be upon Israel!

Anywhere the Bible talks about grandchildren, they are always mentioned as a blessing from God. I know I feel that way. Each new generation helps us feel connected to the family members who have lived before us and all who are still to come. Our grandchildren’s very existence reminds us that God’s plan stretches far beyond our earthly years. Eternity is vast, to be sure, but also quite personal when you look at your grandson walking beside you.

My personal example is important.

We all have our choice to make. Believe in Jesus, acknowledge His gift of eternal salvation and live a life that honors Him.      Or not.

While this is an individual choice, the consequences can affect our family for generations. God explains this twice in the Bible book of Exodus.

Exodus 20:5-6 NKJV (the first time God gave Moses the 10 commandments)

[regarding idols] you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Exodus 34:7 NKJV (the second time God gave Moses the 10 commandments)

[God speaking of Himself] …keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.

The lesson here is that there are rewards for loving God and teaching our grandchildren to love Him, too.  It allows us to live with God’s mercy and forgiveness. However, if we turn against God, and by example, teach our grandchildren to live without Him too, it becomes a curse that can be carried on.

Grandchildren show us the eternal blessings from God:

Deuteronomy 7:9 NIV

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.

Psalm 103:17 NKJV

But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children,

Scripture to use when praying for future generations

I won’t meet my great- great- grandchildren, but the exciting news is, I can bless their lives – whenever they live – with my prayers for them today. Jesus prayed for “those who will believe in me” in John 17:20 and I’m going to pray that, too. God will answer our prayers when His timing is right so these prayers can go forward for generations. God exists beyond the limits of time, so He can answer our prayers for blessing and provision for our ancestors way into the future.

Here’s what Billy Graham had to say about God answering prayer after we die.

Here are two good Bible verses about grandchildren to use when you pray for future generations:

Isaiah 44:3 ESV

For I will pour water on the thirsty land,
and streams on the dry ground;
I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring,
and my blessing on your descendants.

Lord, I pray that you will pour out your Holy Spirit on my children, my grandchildren and all who come after us. Thank you for your blessings that are greater than I can imagine. Please bless my family way into the future. I pray we would always love you and live for you and that not one of us would fall away. Let us be a family who chooses to belong to you. Amen.

Isaiah 59:21 ESV

And as for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the LORD: “My Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children’s offspring,” says the LORD, “from this time forth and forevermore.”

Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the Bible so that we can know you and read your holy words. I pray your word will always be widely available to all people.

Please let your word be in the mouths of my descendants and guide them with your spirit to speak the truth of those words. Give them fresh insights and new words for their generations. Let the spirit of Christ be in their hearts. Amen.

Bible verses about grandchildren give grandparents a mission.

Life is so much easier when you don’t have to learn everything the hard way. Teach your grandkids everything you know about God and it gives them an spiritual advantage. You know the enemy is whispering lies, so let’s push back by speaking the truth.

Psalm 78:4 NLT

We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the LORD, about his power and his mighty wonders.

As a matter of fact, as these Bible verses about grandchildren show, God tells us it’s our job to keep the stories of His work fresh in the minds of our grandchildren.

Deuteronomy 4:9 ESV

Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—

Moses instructs the people to teach their children and grandchildren the stories how God protected and provided for them on the journey out of Egypt. It was true for Moses then and it’s true for modern grandparents today.

Grandchildren should get wisdom and guidance from their grandparents.

Psalm 145:4 NKJV

One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.

I love telling stories about “the olden days”. Like when telephones were attached to a wall. Kids also love to hear about their relatives – especially how they are like a certain one. It gives them stability to know that they are carrying on the family tradition of being a good runner or being smart in math.

Then it’s a natural step for us as grandparents to also teach the lessons of God. We should tell them everything we know about God so that they can go forward from there.

Joshua 4:6-7 NLT

We will use these stones to build a memorial. In the future your children will ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ Then you can tell them, ‘They remind us that the Jordan River stopped flowing when the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant went across.’ These stones will stand as a memorial among the people of Israel forever.”

Deuteronomy 6:2 AMP

so that you and your son and your grandson may fear and worship the LORD your God [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect], to keep [and actively do] all His statutes and His commandments which I am commanding you, all the days of your life, so that your days may be prolonged.

One place to start is with stories from your own life. Have you had a memorable encounter with God? Be sure to let them know.

Bible verses about grandchildren show the truth about consequences.

In the book of Joel, the people of Israel are suffering from an invasion of locusts which God sent as a consequence of their bad behavior.

Joel 1:3 ESV

Tell your children of it,
and let your children tell their children,
and their children to another generation.

If kids relate to nothing else, they will understand the story of bad behavior and its consequences. You can reinforce this lesson with a story or two from your own life. I think it’s good for children to know that even grandparents make mistakes. Finish this lesson with the good news that Jesus is advocating for us and God will forgive.

In Judges, we have this sad story about what happened when grandparents apparently fell down on the job of teaching the history of God.

Judges 2:10-11 ESV

And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel. And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals.

God punished the Israelites by letting their enemies win over them and take them prisoners and it could have been prevented if they had just known.

We have seen that grandchildren point to the future. Grandparents teach about the past. Now we will look at some verses which show that the generations should also help each other.

A few more lessons:

Bible verses about grandchildren show that family is there for each other.

1 Timothy 5:3-4 ESV

Honor widows who are truly widows. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.

Obviously, as grandparents we hate to lean on our younger relatives too much, but it’s a comfort to know they’re there.

Proverbs 13:22 NIV

A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.

This can be a financial inheritance or a spiritual inheritance and hopefully both.

Bible verses about grandchildren show real grandparents in action.

When the Bible talks about grandchildren, you mainly see “your children’s children”. But there are 4 places where we get the name of someone’s grandchild and with it a lesson in family relationships. These named grandchildren belonged to Labin, Jacob (in two places), and Lois.

1. Bible verses about grandchildren – Labin.

Labin was the father of Rachel and Leah; father-in-law to Jacob and grandfather to Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Dinah, Joseph and Benjamin.

Labin seems to be a man who kept up appearances but didn’t always treat his own family that well. He was resentful of Jacob’s success, he spent his daughter’s inheritance which traditionally would have gone to his grandchildren, and was pretty much out for himself. So, when Jacob wanted to return home to Canaan, his wives were more than willing to go with him.

This teaches us a couple of things. First, all 13 of Labin’s grandchildren left with their parents. Because Labin’s behavior was self-serving toward Jacob and uncaring towards his daughters, he undermined his family relationships.

It shows the damage that can happen when we don’t respect our grandchildren’s parents. We need to appreciate them and respect their role as parents.

Second, we must understand that the parent/ child relationship is primary and that grandparents are second. We must not be resentful or selfish. We undermine our kids and their spouses at our peril.

Remember, the key to our grandchildren’s hearts is through the door of our own children.

This story ends with Labin saying a permanent goodbye to his grandchildren.

Genesis 31:55 NIV

Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them. Then he left and returned home.

And he never saw them again.

2. Bible verses about grandchildren: Ephraim and Manasseh.

On a happier note, we have Joseph’s sons, Ephraim and Manasseh.

Genesis 48:9 ESV

Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And he [Jacob] said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.”

Genesis 48:15-16 ESV

And he blessed Joseph and said, “The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day, the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the boys; and in them let my name be carried on, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”

Jacob blessed both of his grandsons Ephraim and Manasseh. He asked for God’s favor to be on them, and he prayed for their future – that they would prosper and have children of their own.

Let’s copy Joseph and pray that God will bless and favor our grandchildren every day.

3. Bible verses about grandchildren – Timothy.

2 Timothy 1:5 NIV

I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

Timothy is our shining star who grew up to be a pastor. Paul even praised him for his sincere faith! Timothy did his grandma proud and he shows us the benefits of raising a grandchild well.

As grandparents, we hold a unique and powerful role in the spiritual lives of our grandchildren. The Bible provides timeless wisdom that we can pray over them, offering guidance, protection, and hope for their future. Whether we are reminding them of God’s promises, teaching them to trust in His love, or covering them in prayer, these verses become a legacy of faith. Let us continue to lean on Scripture as we speak life, truth, and grace into their hearts, knowing that God’s Word will never return void.
