Unshakable Love: Praying the Armor of God Over Your Grandchildren

I miss the days when my girls were little and I could dress them in matching sister outfits and lots of pink. As a grandma, I like little overalls for the boys. Alas. Kids grow up and develop their own ideas about what they will wear.

It’s the same with the armor of God, those famous verses from Ephesians 6. There will come a time when our grandchildren will be able to put on the armor of God for themselves. Until then, as a concerned grandma, I’m going to “dress” them in the armor of God with prayer.

What I hope my grandchildren look like when I’m done praying.

All of us are subject to the devil’s schemes. You, me, and, concerningly, our precious grandchildren. If your grandchildren are not believers yet, be sure that the devil is trying his best to prevent them from hearing the truth.

That is one reason I want to pray the armor of God over all of my grandkids – because our prayers form a spiritual armor that can help them to stand firm, resist the enemy, and live a victorious Christian life.

Let’s look again at verse 12:

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

There is a battle going on. We can’t see it. But we do experience the effects. That is why I pray that my grandkids put on the armor of God every day.

Ephesians 6 shows us 6 areas where we can pray for our grandchildren.

Armor of God – praying for truth

Verse 14 talks about the belt of truth. The belt (God’s truth) holds everything else in our lives together. With prayer, we can bring life-giving truth into our grandchildren’s lives.

Back in Bible times, a soldier used his belt to hold his uniform out of the way so he didn’t trip over it and fall. Today, we use God’s truth so we don’t get tripped up by the lies of Satan and fall in our Christian walk.

Lord, thank You that You have made Your truth available to all who will believe. I pray my grandchildren will believe in Jesus and the truth in Your word. Let them value their Bibles and reach for them daily.

Lord, teach them Your truth for their lives today. Speak to them when they are in doubt or confused.  Show them how to navigate their relationships, their school days and their free time so that they don’t stumble into evil. Let them walk in Your victory as they live out their calling. Amen.

Praying for righteousness

We can’t fight the powers of darkness on our own. Period.

So, God places a “breastplate” over us — not of steel, but of His own righteousness, born from faith in Jesus. It’s our faith in the fact that Jesus washes our sins away so that we can be reconciled to our Holy God that allows us to put on this protection.

As we walk with Jesus, our lives may begin to reflect His goodness outwardly, but true righteousness is never something we can create ourselves. It comes when we lay down our way and receive His gift of salvation. The right kind of righteous. Ha ha.

Lord Jesus, thank You for all that You do for my grandchildren and for me. It is my deepest desire that each child will come to know You and love You for themselves. I pray that they will realize they can’t work their way into Heaven and that even their best efforts to be good enough are but filthy rags (Isaiah 64:4).

Lord, guide my grandchildren into deeper faith so that they stand strong and become leaders in Your Kingdom. Amen.

This is a Bible verse from Isaiah 52:7. It is in white letters on an olive green rectangle. The background is light pink with a rose pattern on it. Used to illustrate the armor of God blog post, the shoes of peace.

Armor of God – Peace

Vs. 15: For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. NLT

Every day, we should wear sturdy hiking boots that give us a firm footing for everything else we do. I’m speaking spiritually here. And what should we be doing? Spreading the gospel and any other mission Jesus might assign us to.

A second part of this message highlights the gospel of peace. It means you, with a kind, gentle heart, approaching others peacefully. And also, you, living peacefully with God.

As long as your walk includes the solid ground of God’s word and the willingness to share the gospel with others, you can still wear your actual flip flops if you want to.

Lord, I pray that my grandchildren will have peace in their lives. That they will have peace in their hearts that comes from knowing they are loved by You – the God of the Universe. And that they will live peacefully in obedience to You. Please use them to be lights in your Kingdom. Let them speak about You confidently when they have a chance.

I pray this morning, that they will stand firm in their faith and step forward with excellence to live out the calling You have designed for them. Amen.

Armor of God – the shield of faith

We already have our grandkids wearing the breastplate of righteousness, and now we are going to give them a shield, too. The shield of faith means trusting in God’s promises. When satan throws out lies about their worth, fears about the future, or discouraging thoughts about today, they can hold up their shield of faith which deflects these “arrows”.

Heavenly Father, please bless my grandchildren with an abundance of faith so they can brush off satan’s words that would try to get them off track. Shield them from temptation, pride, envy, evil thoughts – anything that would lead them away from You. Lord, there are times they may face rejection when they try to share what they believe. Please don’t let them lose confidence. Remind them how much You value them. Thank You for being a refuge and help in times of trouble. Amen.

Praying for the Helmet of Salvation

The helmet of salvation protects our minds, helping us overcome fear, worry, and imagining the worst-case scenario. It reminds us that our salvation in Christ is secure, no matter our circumstances. Wearing this piece of the armor of God means choosing to think with a redeemed mind, filled with hope, truth, and confidence in God’s promises.

Father God, thank You for Your gift of salvation through Jesus. I pray that all my grandchildren will choose this gift for themselves. Until then, please continue to protect their minds from messages that are not from You.

Lord, so much of what they see and hear on social media and advertising is not from You and these messages seem like they destroy kids from the inside out. Give my grandchildren discernment to reject what is not the truth and then remove the lies far from them. Give them strong, healthy minds that bring a fresh approach to reaching their generation with Your message. Amen.

This is a Bible verse from 2 Corinthians 10:3-5. It is on a blue background, with the words in white. The blue frame is on a background drawing of delicate flowers. Used to illustrate Ephesians 6, and the necessity of having the armor of God,

The armor of God – Sword of the Spirit

The Sword of the Spirit — God’s own Word — is both a shield against attack and a tool for advancing in spiritual battles. It cuts through lies, confusion, and fear, replacing them with unshakable truth.

When our grandchildren face academic pressure, social challenges, or moments of slipping self-esteem, verses like Psalm 91:2 can become their lifeline: “This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.” May they discover early that God’s Word is steady and unchanging, unlike the shifting opinions and untested viewpoints of the world.

When we read in Romans 8 that “Nothing will separate us from the love of God,” we can trust it completely — and so can they. It’s a truth they can share with friends who are discouraged, and a light that can pierce the darkness in a middle school hallway or a troubled heart.

Lord God, please place Your word deep into the hearts of my grandchildren so that they can bring it to mind when they need to. Let them develop a love for Your word that involves daily study. Please give them each a special life verse to rely on. Show them how to use Your sword of the Spirit and let them get better at it every day.

Lord, cover my grandchildren in all of Your armor today so that there is no vulnerability that satan can exploit. I pray they will follow Jesus into His eternal victory today, tomorrow, and for the rest of their lives. Amen.

Conclusion

Praying Grandparents, I believe Ephesians 6:18 is for us: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—

When we pray the Armor of God over our grandchildren, we are doing far more than speaking comforting words — we are inviting the power and protection of God Himself into their lives.

Each piece of armor is a reminder that our grandchildren are not alone in the battles they face, whether they realize it yet or not. Through prayer, we can cover their minds with truth, guard their hearts with righteousness, and place a shield of faith in their hands, equipping them to stand firm against whatever comes their way.

By faithfully lifting them up and clothing them in His armor, we help prepare them to face the world with courage, wisdom, and steadfast faith — knowing they are loved, protected, and never beyond the reach of our prayers or God’s mighty hand.
