12 Days of Christmas Meaning: Simple Faith Lessons for Kids
What if I told you that the Christmas season could last an extra 12 days?
If you cheered,
get ready for more festivities and a good excuse to leave your tree up until January 6. You can have some extra hot chocolate, and there will definitely be singing.
If you groaned,
just know that this is “Christmas-lite” without all the expectations. And this post has all the tools to make it easy for you.
Simple Faith Lessons
We are going to use the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas”, to teach our grandchildren more about the Christian faith. There is a hidden meaning behind the gifts in the song. As we reveal what each gift represents, we teach small Bible lessons to the kids. Each day can become a sweet reminder of God’s love and a natural way to talk about faith together.
When are the 12 days of Christmas?
According to the calendar used by many Christian denominations, the 12 days of Christmas start on December 25. The next 12 days represent the time before the arrival of the three wise men on January 6. So, even though we sing the song “12 Days of Christmas” throughout the holiday season, we don’t start counting until the 25th. As a result, we get 12 extra days of the Christmas season.
The lively images of this song and the list of unusual gifts are sure to engage your grandchildren. (Really, what would you do with 7 swans?) But behind the playful lyrics is a gift bag full of spiritual symbolism. As you sing the song with your grandchildren, use it as a doorway into a conversation about faith. It’s a simple way to teach the word of God using a light touch.
Here is Pentatonix singing the song in case you need to hear it.
Introduce the “Secret Meanings” in the song.
Invite your grandchildren to guess what each gift might stand for before you tell them. Kids love discovering something surprising, and it’s delightful to sing about one thing while knowing it points to something entirely different. You can explore one meaning each day, or simply pick a few favorites to talk about.
This activity also works wonderfully for long-distance grandparenting—you can text clues, questions, and answers back and forth and share the fun, no matter how many miles are between you.
The Code to the 12 Days and Their Christian Meanings — With Talking Points for Kids
A Partridge in a Pear Tree — Jesus
12 Days of Christmas meaning: Partridges are wonderfully protective parents. They stay close to their chicks, shelter them, and watch over them with great care. Partridges build their nests right on the ground, choosing to live where their little ones live.
When Jesus came to Earth, He did the same—He came to live among us, close to us, right where we are. And now that He is in Heaven, He watches over us from above, like a bird perched safely in a tree keeping an eye on its family.
Talking point: Let your grandchildren know that Jesus loves them very much, and He is always looking out for them. This is also a good time to remind them that you pray for them often, asking God to protect them and their whole family.
Two Turtle Doves — Old and New Testaments
12 Days of Christmas meaning: Hopefully, your grandchildren have their own Bible, but if not, you can explain that the Bible is God’s story. It’s divided into 2 parts: the Old Testament, before Jesus came to Earth, and the New Testament, which tells us about Jesus’ life.
Talking point: The Bible shows us God’s love from beginning to end. It starts with God making the world and ends with a description of Heaven, where we can live with God forever. The Bible can help us live a good life the way God wants us to.
Three French Hens — Faith, Hope, and Love

Talking point: As children of God, we should try to be faithful to God, have hope in His divine plan, and be full of love for other people. These are God’s priorities for us. These three principles help you walk closely with Jesus.
Four Calling Birds — The Four Gospels
12 Days of Christmas meaning: The first 4 books of the New Testament talk about Jesus’ life. All the other books of the Bible either tell us that Jesus is coming (Old Testament) or tell how people lived after Jesus came.
Talking point: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John tell us about how Jesus was born, the way he lived, and how he died. They tell us about his friends, the things he said, and about the miracles he performed.
Five Golden Rings — The first five books of the Bible (the Law)
12 Days of Christmas meaning: These books are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Jewish people call these 5 books The Torah, meaning the law, because there are lots of rules about how to live in them. But they also have famous stories of early life on earth, like the Garden of Eden, Noah and the Ark, and the 10 commandments.
Talking Point: God’s story started long before Jesus was born. God knew everyone who was born or will be born, from the beginning of time, and has a great plan for you!
The Old Testament has so many rules because people thought that if they did all the rules right, God would be happy with them. Now, we have Jesus who made a way for all people to be in good standing with God. He did this by dying for us. We should still try to live a good life, but we also have Jesus to stand up for us when we can’t.
Fun fact: In Bible times, if you wanted to be a certain type of priest, you had to memorize all 5 books.

Six Geese a-Laying — The Six Days of Creation
12 Days of Christmas meaning: The story of creation is found in Genesis 1:1-31. It’s easy to find because it’s the first chapter in the first book. Here is a list of what happened during the 6 days that God created the world. On the 7th day, He rested.
- Day 1: God created day and night.
- Day 2: God created the sky.
- Day 3: Separated the sea from the land and had plants start to grow.
- Day 4: Made sun, moon, and stars to mark the seasons
- Day 5: Created birds and fish.
- Day 6: God created land animals and people.
Talking point: God made a beautiful world for us to enjoy. If your grandchildren are fond of a particular place (the mountains, the ocean) explain that God made those places, too. On the 7th day of Creation, God rested, and so should we.
Seven Swans a-Swimming — Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit
12 Days of Christmas meaning: Isaiah 11 begins with a prophecy about the coming Messiah. In verses 2-3, it lists 7 spiritual gifts that will be made perfect in this person. These gifts are: that the Holy Spirit of the Lord will rest on him, and he will have wisdom and understanding, counsel and might, knowledge and the fear of (proper respect for) the Lord.
Talking point: God gives us gifts to help us grow into the person He wants us to be. These aren’t things we can become on our own, but we can ask the Lord to increase these gifts in our lives.
Eight Maids a-Milking — Eight Beatitudes
12 Days of Christmas meaning: The 8 ideas here are from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5:3-11 ESV
- Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted
- Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
- Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
- Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy
- Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
- Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
- Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Talking point: Jesus told us how to live happy and blessed lives. The way Jesus would like us to live is different than the way a lot of people live. For example, some people might want revenge when another person hurts them, but Christians are called to be merciful.
Nine Ladies Dancing — Nine Fruits of the Spirit

Talking point: Day 8 and Day 9 go together because Christians are called to live a life different than non-Christians. Explain to your grandchildren that they can live free of trouble and things that tie them down. Not only are they giving up bad behavior, but their lives will look more like Jesus. They will know they are on the right path because they will find the “fruit” increasing.
Ten Lords a-Leaping — Ten Commandments
12 Days of Christmas meaning: On Day 5, we had the first 5 books of the Bible. Now on day 10, here are the most important laws that were given in the Torah: the 10 Commandments in Exodus 20.
- You shall have no other gods before me.
- You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments
- You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain
- Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
- Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
- You shall not murder
- You shall not commit adultery.
- You shall not steal
- You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
- You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.
Talking point: God’s rules help keep us safe and close to Him.
Eleven Pipers Piping — Eleven Faithful Disciples
Matthew 10:2-4 ESV
These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
(There were 12 disciples, but our song does not include Judas.)
Talking point: Jesus’ friends told the world about Him.
Twelve Drummers Drumming — Twelve Points of the Apostles’ Creed
12 Days of Christmas meaning: The Apostles’ Creed is a statement of faith used in some Christian churches, but not all. Since the “12 Days of Christmas” was written in the 18th century in either England or France, the churches in those areas likely used the Creed.
- I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in
- Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was
- conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
- suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried;
- he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead;
- he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
- from there he will come to judge the living and the dead
- I believe in the Holy Spirit,
- the holy catholic Church, and the communion of saints,
- the forgiveness of sins.
- the resurrection of the body.
- and the life everlasting.
Talking point: The Apostles’ Creed was written in the second or third century and reminds us of what we believe.
And there you have it. The secret meanings of the 12 Days. You’ll never look at the 12 Days of Christmas the same again, will you?
Fun treats to add to the 12 Days of Christmas Celebration.
There is no need to give your grandchildren elaborate gifts to count off the 12 Days of Christmas. But it is fun to have a little something…

12 wooden ornaments that are about 3” tall and have vintage pictures of each day.
12 Days of Christmas Book.

Christmas Prayer for your Grandchildren
Dear Lord,
I am in awe of You this Christmas season. Thank You for the best gift ever: our Savior Jesus Christ. I like to imagine the night He was born and what the sky must have been when the angels appeared to the shepherds. Thank you for this glimpse of Your creation.
Father, forgive me for the times I have chased after the world’s gifts instead of what really matters. Lord, I want to know You more and follow You more closely. I pray that I can pass on the wisdom of your 10 Commandments to my grandkids so they can live in right relationship with you.
I want to teach my grandchildren how much You love them. Let them live a life that pleases you. Fill their hearts with your faith, hope, and love. May they be blessed with joy, peace, and patience. Let them grow up to be kind, good, gentle, and self-controlled. When they are old enough, I pray they will choose to follow You, Jesus.
I look forward to a time in Heaven when we will all be singing and dancing in Your Presence. Amen.
Closing: A tradition worth passing on
